ppp not forwarding broadcast packets?

Among the many problems plaguing me this weekend, ppp is not forwarding broadcast packets
from a client onto the ethernet.

It responds to broadcast pings, but doesn't resend them to the ethernet so others can
respond.

It doesn't allow udp broadcast packets (such as smb network neighborhood scans) onto the
ethernet.

very inconvenient. Anyone recognize this problem, or do I need to go into details?

[root@saqqara samba]# ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:24:7A:88:9A

ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol

RX packets:129 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:66 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

(I changed the near side of the ppp link to a different IP just to see if that was an
issue it was .104 before).
