That sounds like a fair description of a certain University Computing
Centre, but on this occasion, it's NOT in academia. However, with the
help of the various comments posted in response to my original post, I
have managed to get the said SysAdmin to see sense - said script has
now been killed, and he's decided that he'll take much better advice
than that of his 14 year old non-computing son before he institutes
anything resembling it again...
Many thanks everybody - and can we please kill this thread stone dead,
it's now served its purpose...
