"Kernel Hacker'

I am somewhat new to linux, but I have worked with it lond enough to know the
basics of it and would like to use it for development purposes. Hence, the
first step I would like to take is to compile a development kernel. What are
the minimum requirements for this. I have ensured that the binaries listed on
LinuxHQ are present, but I still receive compile time errors, especially when
networking is disabled. Are there other binaries that need to be present (i.e.
bin86, glib, glibc-devel, ...)

thanks
chrisj
