Have you started remote xterms? Did your remote machine crash?
I had similar experiences when I started a remote xterm to a
NT/eXceed machine and the NT machine locked hard.
A few days later the xterm process was still lurking around.
Somehow Linux didn't notice that the connection was long gone...
