I have been working on some changes for allowing the use of CLONE_PID from userspace (ie: not just for SMP init).

Following is a description (rather long) of the sorts of changes made and attached below is the patch. The patch is against 2.1.59, (but also patches cleanly on 2.1.60) and is gzipped to save space.

I also posted this right around the point where this list got nuked, and that is why I am reposting it now.

CLONE_PID and related changes:

I have moved some of the task_struct fields into a separate structure that is also shared when CLONE_PID is used in the clone flags. This structure is as follows:

Moving many of the fields out of task_struct into a "process" shared structure simplifies things a great deal as things such as uid, gid, groups, ..., are expected to be the same for all threads of a process anyhow.

There are three new fields that weren't previously in task_struct

1. count (a reference count for this structure) 2. first_thread (used for a linked list of threads for the process) 3. ps_lock (SMP locks for this structure)

The following additional fields have been added to task_struct:

The tid field is a "thread" id for the task entry. This is zero by default, and is set if clone() is ever called for the process with the CLONE_PID flag. The tids are allocated from the same number pool as the process ids, as this makes modification of most pid argument taking system calls straight forward. Where it makes sense for a system call to be able to operate upon a thread all that needs to be done in many instances is change the lookup of the task structure from find_task_by_pid() to find_task_by_id(), which first checks the pidhash table, and failing this, the tidhash table.

Because of the large scale search and replaces that were needed after moving stuff from task_struct to a different sub-structure, this patch is rather large, and at least 4/5'ths of the patch are probably trivial.

The changes of interest are:

* kernel/fork.c: o gettid() system call added. If the task doesn't have a thread id then one is created here, and the thread id is hashed. o get_pid() changed to get_id() and is used for getting both pids and tids. o copy_ps() function added for copying of the struct process_struct. o do_fork() changes to set the tid, and call copy_ps() to copy/clone the process struct as required. Thread ids are hashed here upon creation. If the current process doesn't have a thread id, and calls clone() with CLONE_PID, then a thread id is created and hashed here as well. * kernel/exit.c: o exit_ps() function to clean up a struct process_struct o release(): unhash tids and exit_ps() calls added. o sys_kill (kill_proc) work on both threads and processes. o sys_wait4: can wait for a thread, or for any thread. * kernel/sched.c: o setscheduler(), sys_sched_getscheduler(), and sys_sched_getparam() are thread enabled. o show_task() shows the thread id now as well. * kernel/sys.c: o sys_setpriority(), sys_getpriority() thread enabled. o sys_getgroups(), sys_setgroups() have extra SMP locking as the grouplists are now shared. * arch/*/kernel/ : o thread enabled ptrace() functions o added gettid syscall numbers (also added gettid syscall entry in entry.S on i386) * fs/proc/*, and linux/include/proc_fs.h o Added some threads awareness. Using CLONE_PID no longer causes the creation of two separate /proc/<pid> directories. One can now change to /proc/<tid> and see the same information as for /proc/<pid> except the status file lists the state for the appropriate thread. In addition to the thread id entry added to the status file is a number of current threads entry. A directory /proc/<pid>/threads has also been created. In this directory are symlinks to the /proc/<tid> directory entries. Upon accessing the status, or listing the threads directory, if the process doesn't have a thread id, one is created and hashed at this point for it.

There are a few things left to do still.

* More work is needed to fix up the locking of the task's ps struct for SMP. This shouldn't break things for SMP now as nothing is using the CLONE_PID clone flag outside of the kernel (as far as I know). * Signalling needs a bit of work. Pthreads specifies that a signal only goes to one thread (except some async signals like SIGKILL). Right now only any process group signals will end up going to all threads. What we probably want is some means of specifing either behavior, so we can either have a signal go to some thread or all threads, as desired. I need to learn a bit more about signals before I start messing around in that code. * I have started some modifications to strace to get it to work properly with CLONE_PID'ed clone()s, and am almost done. It would be nice if thread enabling gdb will be as easy, but I will probably have to leave that to somebody else. * exec() needs to be looked into, wrt what happens when a thread exec()s. Since the thread ids are allocated from the pid number pool we should be able to transform a threads into a process (there's not really much difference -- they are both just tasks) by using the thread's tid as the new pid (this wasn't my idea but I like it!) I haven't started looking into what this requires yet. * I would like to modify LinuxThreads to work with CLONE_PID. Right now I have only tested this code with smaller test programs -- being able to use the pthreads interface would allow much more thorough testing since existing pthreads programs could be used.
