2.2.8/9 and alphaserver 2100 smp problems

I finally got around to trying the latest kernels on a redhat 6.0
alphaserver 2100 smp box. Both 2.2.8 and 2.2.9 kernels hang on
startup. The following is copied from screen.

I'm using the same config from 2.2.7 for 2.2.8 and 2.2.9, 2.2.7 boots fine.
