So parport was compiled in, as was lp, but request_module was called. I
don't have the code with me, but doesn't that imply that parport_(lowlevel)
was compiled as a module?

I don't think that lp copes with that properly -- if there are no ports when
it inits, it won't try again when it's opened. I expect it would be a
one-line fix, but that's what I think the situation is at the moment.
