I get these messages often on my second machine (with a flaky harddisk).
It seems that the kernel doesn't handle corrupt disks in a way that allows
the system to survive (see the other thread about the zip-disks).
This makes linux at least somewhat volnurable to DOS-attacks with bad
floppys/zips etc.
