Ok, many thanks Bill and Eloy, I now understand the situation. I
could never have imagined that smbmount is braindead enough to
remember the password only when it's given on the command line
and not when it's given interactively.

I'll try to do something about this (by hacking smbmount) as
soon as I find some extra time.

Surprisingly, Samba options won't affect whether the NT SMB
shares require a password or not :) You probably didn't mean
this, though :)
