PAS-16 sound as module problem

PAS-16 sound compiled into 2.1.127 works. I tried to compile all
the sound stuff as modules though, pas-16, soundblaster (sb is
supposed to work with the sb part of the pas-16 and has done
so before) mpu401 and opl3.

I updated /etc/conf.modules as specified in sound documentation.
I ran depmod -a 2.1.127 and rebooted.
But I couldn't get it to load.
modprobe pas2 loaded all sound modules except for pas2.o,
complaining that the device was in use. It clearly wasn't
for I couldn't get any sound. /dev/dsp1 didn't work either, it
was supposed to work with the loaded sb module.

Am I missing something obvious, or could there be a bug when
making sound modules?
