Terry,

I got a few responses to my post about why the PPP went away when both
scsi and ide were active. One was from Alan Cox suggesting hdparm -u 1
which had no effect, as well as yours for more info:

Hardware config is: PPro 200 , 96MB ram.

IDE interface: Intel 82371SB PIIX3 IDE (rev 0). (from /proc/pci)

Hard drive: Model=WDC AC2540F, FwRev=12.08R33, SerialNo=WD-WM292 (hdparm)

SW config is RedHat 5.1 with necessary upgrades (Documentation/Changes)

SCSI is: (from /proc/scsi/aha152x)
Adaptec 152x SCSI driver; $Revision: 1.7 $
ioports 0x0140 to 0x015f
interrupt 0x0b
disconnection/reconnection enabled
parity checking enabled
synchronous transfers disabled
0 commands currently queued
enabled debugging options: (abort) (reset)

Other hard drives are:
Model=WDC AC31600H, FwRev=17.11P19, SerialNo=WD-WT289
Model=WDC AC2540H, FwRev=12.08R30, SerialNo=WD-WT261

with swap striped across all three:
Filename Type Size Used Priority
/dev/hda2 partition 31244 504 0
/dev/hdb2 partition 32252 464 0
/dev/hdc2 partition 30740 516 0

Memory is mostly free: (lots of buffers in use)
total: used: free: shared: buffers: cached:
Mem: 98107392 86048768 12058624 16285696 60391424 8622080

I performed a second test, this time using cdparanoia to read audio data
from my: "Vendor: TOSHIBA Model: CD-ROM XM-5701TA Rev: 0167" cdrom, the
only other device on the scsi chain. I had the same behavior, although
less severe by far. Definitely present though. I should add that the
actual transfer of SCSI data to IDE, or vice versa works great, and the
system is responsive in all other ways (X, other disk activity etc.) as
far as I can tell.
