My first impression is that it may not be necessary for client
to change. But that is all I have and it works for me :-).

Think about it. I don't think client should change. However, you
have to patch the server kernel and install knfsd-980915. I will
double check Linux 2.1.122 since those patches are only tested on
2.1.121.
