This got rid of the messages and the screen still blanks.

I did. Both (alone) were ineffective. I left the vallue 0x101 in when I
make the change above.
Having done enough rebooting for the month, I'm leaving it as is unless
something else breaks.
I also upgraded to kernel 2.0.35 in the process: this had no effect on the
messages, but the changes are untested on '34.
