floppy problems on alpha

I'm running 2.1.111 on an SX164 MB. I can fdformat a floppy, but it
bombs when verifing on diskettes that I know to be good. Is there
something wrong with the floppy driver for alpha? The driver detects the
onboard floppy controller as a 2.88MB floppy. Thanks for any help.
