2.1.109 text console vs. XF86_SVGA

I think that the standard 2.1.109 text console driver
may be adjusting some sort of origin pointer when printk is called,
even when the X server has the display.

The symptom that I notice is that when I load the irda module,
which printk's an annoying message about every two seconds, my X
screen pans horizontally about 200 (256?) pixels spontaneously every
two seconds. If I remove the irda module, the panning stops.
