Subject: 2.0.35 breaks PPSkit

Hello,

I'm not subscribed here, but I have a little problem:

Some time ago I started a patch for the Linux 2.0 kernel to implement
PPS (pulse per second) processing as used for precision time keeping.

While I did not intend to include the patch to 2.0 (I started too
late), the patch is quite stable for some time, and nobody had
reported a severe problem to me.

During development I hacked-out some general fixes that are now in the
kernel. As I'm no planning to add new features for 2.0, I'm tempted to
suggest the patch to be added to the mainstream kernel. (Configuration
of the PPS feature is controlled by "make config" and "experimental
features")

Unfortunately recent additions made in 2.0.35 for X.25 (N_AX25) used
the same values that I used for a line discipline. From my patch:

--- linux-2.0.34/include/asm-alpha/termios.h Sun Mar 24 11:09:37 1996
+++ linux/include/asm-alpha/termios.h Sat Jun 6 22:57:37 1998

+/* N_STRIP on i386 */
+#define N_PPSCLOCK 5 /* pulse-per-second detection */

#ifdef __KERNEL__
/* eof=^D eol=\0 eol2=\0 erase=del

The real problem is: Is there a responsible person that
assigns/registers/maintains these numbers? What number should I use?

Ulrich Windl
