This is likely just a configuration issue, but I'm sending this message
here as I'm not entirely certain of that. (It works in Windows, etc.)
I have an ESS 1688 AudioDrive that I recently bothered to get working in
Linux. I must compliment Alan on the excellent sound updates, it
simplified matters considerably. (I'm using 2.1.102)
Sound output is excellent. I think it's only using 8bit sound, despite
my having the proper setting for dma16, but I can easily cope with that.
It is a plug-and-play card, so I can easily change the settings when
loading the modules using isapnp, I just need to know what to change.
When playing sound, or even when the sb driver isn't loaded. (As it in
happens after the driver is unloaded, so it might be a problem with some
state that the sb driver sets.) I get a buzzing/clicking type noise in
the speaker. These noises seem to happen when a screen update happens,
but it's hard to tell. I'm pretty sure I hear the clicks with keypresses
(or is it the key appearing on the terminal?) and a buzzing with the
moving of the mouse. Heck, I could even swear I heard it when the
harddrive is doing its thing.
So, my guess would be interrupt problems, yet a compare of
/proc/interrupts to my PnP configuration reveals no conflicts. Ditto
with a check of DMA and ioports. Does anyone have any suggestions? I
would be happy to provide more information, if it would be helpful.
On a side note: what aliases do you have to have in conf.modules to get
the sound driver to autoload on access to /dev/audio, etc? I can't find
this information in the documentation.
