kernel problems

I am still having problems with building the kernel!

Summary:

*When doing "make config" with 2.1.98+ I get all the way through the
script, then when the script tries to run
/usr/src/linux/scripts/split-include Linux gives a "permission denied"
message and the make goes down with error 126.

*When doing "make xconfig" the make gets to ./scripts/tkgen before the
"Permission denied" message

*"Make dep" immediately goes down with error 126

However, with 2.0.33 source, "Make config" goes ok, but only until the
sound config, where it goes down with "Permission denied" on
./drivers/sound/configure!

I untar the tarball with the "tar zxpvf" command, which has worked until
recently. I tried "tar zxvf" and "tar zxf" to see if not extracting
protections would help, but to no avail.

I am at the end of my keyboard, so to speak. Help! Please! I'm sinking!
HELP!
