I sucked down the fresh 2.1.98 source yesterday, compiled, ran for a bit, then
recompiled using 2.1.98. So far:

The only Strangeness noticed:
In logs there is (none) where the hostname used to be
ifconfig status shows numbers for TX in the errors field
occasionally a hiccup spits out to syslog about not being able to load module,
well, that I can't seem to find in the logs right now :( , something like
net-ph-something. Sorry for the vagueness on that.
all strangeness are probably product of my overlooking something that needs to
be upgraded or configured. I'll play around some more today since I'm home
bound with pneumonia and have nothing better to do but sit here. :)
