Sorry for my last post, but my problem seems to be hardware related: The
problem raised together with a new Riva128 based graphics adapter in my
system (Elsa Victory Erazor). It seems that running X on this board hits
performance badly. This means, of course, X is only running not doing or
drawing something. I checked
textmode only and not starting X on bootup -> Normal (fast) behaviour
no difference between 2.1.96
and older kernels
and started X and closed it (with alt+ctrl+backspace) -> slow
and running X (no textmode) -> slow
Regards
Carsten
