Maybe

#if GCC_VERSION > 2.8.0
#error Your compiler is too new, it compiles incorrect kernels
#endif

would do the job? :-) 2.0.34 is expected to be stable, and if it does
cot compile well with 2.8.0, it is bug, and user should be warned.
