Ouch message and wrong IDE detection

A few issues:

1.
Well, this is probably not a bug, still it puzzles me:
When I boot 1.2.89-pre3, I get the following message a few lines AFTER I
see a kerneld reports it's version:
Ouch, no kerneld for message 2147418113

Then, I tried to increase the timeout in ipc/msg.c to 100 sec, and when I
rebooted, I had a nice 1.5 minute wait while trying to mount root
read/write. That reminds me that I couldn't make 1.2.88 boot at all,
because it got stuck forever in the same place (mounting root fs
read/write), AND it had the same "Ouch" message.

I use the following:

Kernel modules 2.1.85
Gnu C 2.7.2.3
Binutils linux-2.8.1.0.1
Linux C Library 5.4.33
Dynamic Linker (ld.so) 1.9.5
Linux C++ Library 27.2.8
Procps 1.2.6
Mount 2.7l
Net-tools (1997-05-11)
Kbd 0.94
Sh-utils 1.16

2.
I don't have anything on /dev/hdb, but Linux insists on detecting somet
hing there. I have a standard Intel Triton motherboard and use the
on-board IDE.
Extract from the sys. log:

This is my first bug-report, so please excuse me if I left something out
or broke some etiquette rule...

Best regards,

Haim Gelfenbeyn.
