Don't know if this is a related problem but doing a

dd if=vmlinuz of=/dev/fd0

does not work for me with 2.1.85(SMP)/IO_APIC.
The machine won't boot from this floppy (stops after "Loading",
(no .....'s displayed)).
If the same kernel-file is dd'ed on floppy under 2.0.29 it
works as expected.
