People who do not understand how to use bzip2 shouldn't be compiling a
kernel.
Do you know anyone who does _not_ have more CPU cycles than Internet
connectivity? Actually, my opinion is: delete the .gz files. Even
better: delete the .bz2 of older kernels, too, as long as they can be
reconstructed with reverse patching.
People, learn to behave with respect to bandwidth. We don't want to
look like Microsoft, right?
BTW: I operate an ftp mirror of the linux kernel. And I always whince
in pain when I see that the kernel mirror is larger as most
distributions (!):

The last one is my favourite Linux distribution. The second number is
without the patches he applied to the pristine sources. This is a shame
if you ask me. It's half the size of the v2.0 directory.
