Ingo Mohair and Doug Ledford both recommended turning off Triton support.

That appears to have solved the problem (It's been repeating the dd for 4
hours now). Good job!

I guess I should pay more attention to that setting in the future. I've
typically ignored it without trouble on a number of SCSI-based systems.
Apparently the default for this parameter in Linus' kernels is different than
that included with Slackware 3.3 because I don't recall changing the setting
for either case.
