Can we make smbfs standalone?

Can we make smbfs a standalone module (like ntfs?)

All this would involve is moving the smbfs headers into the
source directory instead of include (I don't think anyone
else needs them).

This would also be a good idea for other modules lik smbfs which
have private headers in public kernel directories...

Then instead of applying "patches" I can get the whole
shebang (the reason this is difficult is I have an interim
patched 2.1.57, and I need to get a fresh one to apply the
patches...I'd much rather get a smbfs package which is
self contained...)

Also, how is smbfs being handled again 2.0.30...
