Hi all,

sorry for the offtopic mail, I would have put it on cola, but i don't have
usenet access.

What I want to say is this:

Today, I went to a seminar on Corporate networking (basically a lot of hot
air) and there was this Microsoft guy going on about NT as if Bill Gates
was the one who invented the distributed computing paradigm and how NT has
1) pre-emptive multitasking 2) virtual memory etc.. When I pointed out to
this gentleman that Unix has had these things since it was born, he said
yes, Unix has those things but the cost of a Unix System. According to him
the cost of a Unix system is of the order of Rs. 1000,000 (1 US$ = Rs. 36
approx.). I pointed out the availability of Linux and how it does all
those things and more for free, I was shrugged off. Lots of people there
were predicting the demise of Unix and the dominance of NT.

What I would like to know is how much of this hype surrounding NT is true?
Guys talk about NT supporting SMP on upto 4 processors and enterprise
version upto 8 processors. What is Linux's limit of SMP, if any? NT runs
on Intel, MIPS, Alpha and PowerPC. Linux runs on Intel, Alpha and Sparc.
what about the rest. They talk about applications? Are they there for
Linux and other Unices? Administration: is NT really superior in ease of
use and administration.

I would be grateful if some of you could share your thoughts with me. In
case someone feels that the issue is too irrelevant for this list I won't
mind personal copies. In that case please use my reply-to: address.

tia,

sachin
