# you don't tell us what CPU you have. What is the normal compiletime for you?
# With make -j, the compile will get into heavy swapping and may get a
# horrible factor slower. So I guess that a normal compile for you may take 10
# minutes, while under swapping it may be a factor 100 slower and so may take
# perhaps 1000 minutes (14 hours)

10 minutes to 14 hours? Mmmmm. On my P90/48MB (96MBswap), a regular
compile takes 7 minutes. In single user mode, under 31-pre7 +Werner's
buffer patch:

Starting make
522.16user 40.30system 10:45.62elapsed 87%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata 0maxresident)k
0inputs+0outputs (191784major+168135minor)pagefaults 17440swaps
done with make

I maxed out w/ 38MB swapped used, load of 14 (average of 7).

An interesting note, my script that I use failed with this patch level :(
When running a
concurrent "vmstat 10", gcc bombs out after about 3 or 4 minutes with an
internal error - signal 7. <shrug>.
