This is in response to people's argument that large files will be a
problem for
old programs.

I do not see the problem as that bad. One should not confuse the being
larger than
2GB (or build with an fs that allows this) with an access path that is
restricted
to 2GB. For a while, these new animals (large files) will not be
accessible to
some applications - so what? Is this an argument that makes sense:
do not introduce anything to the system that the old programs cannot
use

I don't think so. It is perfectly ok to have some objects off limits to
some
programs.
