btw, one question (as i posted to the list and nobody said
anything) with 2.1.x, as early as .14 or earlier, and as late as
.34, on a sparc slc (sun4c), memory disappears until the total RSS
is down to as little as a few dozen kilobytes, to the point that a
bash running on console swaps continuously if you type into it.
page (and more recently buffer, though mainly page) cache amounts
don't eve go down significanly, also.

i'm pretty lost trying to figure out what's going on underneath the
hood with this, but wondering if you had any tips. also, if you
want access to the machine to look at what happens, let me know
(and i'll boot 2.1.34).

People are seeing this on low memory Intel systems as well, it's
probably therefore not a Sparc specific problem. Someone should
certainly look into it.
