Doing "make bzimage" will allow you to use larger kernels, if you have a
somewhat recent version of LILO or loadlin. It's
documented in Documentation/initrd.txt. That file, BTW, could probably
stand updating, since the initrd and bzimage patch is now in the
mainstream kernel, and more recent versions of LILO and loadlin are now
available. I'll try to inform myself a little bit more and suggest an
update.
