trouble w/ modularized PPP and 2.1.17

I should have known I was talking too soon when I said I could
run PPP w/ kerneld on 2.1.16 without any problems... now, on
2.1.17, if I start pppd I get "this system lacks PPP support"
even if modules.dep and modules.conf seem to be set up OK...

I upgraded then modules from 2.1.8 to 2.1.13 but no news.

Then I tried insmod'ing slhc.o and ppp.o, which succeeded but
even though ppp0 came up with P-t-P OK, I could not ping my
ISP (no send LED blinking on my modem) and I got these

Dec 23 23:52:01 redrose pppd[406]: pppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0

etc, etc, until I rebooted into 2.1.16 which has no trouble in
dialing up my ISP and talking (btw with modules 2.1.13 now).

Did I do anything dumb in building 2.1.17 ?

Thanks in advance,
