Kernel hangs on root fs mount -- 2.0.3

I am using kernel 2.0.3 with the pentium memcpy and arpd patches added.
I am compiling with pgcc snapshot 960426. I am experiencing this problem
with optimization levels 3 and 6, and with init versions 2.63 and 2.64.

The kernel is hanging during boot-up after the line about mounting the
root fs read only, and before init gives its startup messages.

The same configurations boot correctly with kernel 2.0.0.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Can anyone offer a solution /
explanation?

Thanks.

B
