2.0.0 hangup

I just had my first bad vibe from 2.0.0. I foolishly built a remote POP
(mail/shell server system and terminal server system...2 boxes) with 2.0.0
on a totally a.out system. Things ran fine for 12 days, and then the mail
server fell apart. The complaints were things like our adduser script
hung (turned out the edquota -p skeleton $user had hung in uninteruptable
sleep), POP3 mail was unavailable (telnetting to the port, I found it hung
after the pass PASSWD command...also in state D). There were a multitude
of other processes (bashs, fingers, sendmails, lots of in.pop3ds) in
either Z or D. The odd thing was, all partitions were functional...I
could cd into each of them and do an ls...but df hung in D. There were no
exciting Oops messages, not even anything interesting the any of the logs.
Things like sync and lilo also hung in D...so I ended up just killing the
watchdog daemon, sat back and waited for the reboot and FS repair.
Interestignly, though lilo hung, it seems it did it's job as it booted up
to 1.3.72.

The system is the following: Tyan Tomcat II with 1 P100, 512kb cache,
64mb RAM, NCR 810, IBM 500mb SCSI, 2 IBM 2gb SCSI, Conner dds2 DAT,
3c509b, trident (elcheapo) PCI VGA.

The term server which is still live with 2.0.0 is a Tomcat I P100, 512kb
cache, 32mb RAM, NCR 810, IBM 500mb SCSI, 3c509, 2 Cyclades 16ye, same
video card.
