Compaq Fast-SCSI-2

Hello all:

I am trying to install Linux on a Compaq ProSignia 300 with a Fast-SCSI-2
onboard interface. It also has a PCnet-PCI adapter. I have tried all the
precompiled Slackware bootkernels (mostly 1.3.20) but none of them work.
Some (ascsi, scsi, ascsint2) detect the internal adapter as a NCR5xx
something but an illegal instruction trap occurs and everything grinds to
a halt.

I've also tried (without success) to build a custom 1.2.13 kernel. Even
with all the SCSI drivers enabled, the SCSI device can't be detected.

I've also built the 1.3.94 kernel, using the AM79C974 driver (this was
suggested for installing on the Compaq Deskpro XL). However, this didn't
work either.

The adapter as a 32-bit ASPI driver (for DOS, unfortunately) and an SCO
Unix boot demo I got correctly identifies the SCSI adapter as a version
1.9.0 Compaq Fast-SCSI-2 adapter. The system actually has three SCSI
devices, a fixed disk, tape, and CDROM. It doesn't have IDA. I know of
some sites which are successfully using ProSignia 300's as Linux servers,
but I don't have access to these.

Any assistance would be much appreciated. Please send your responses to:
