Hmm, maybe the Travelmate 5000 has reverted to a "standard" PS/2 mouse
interface, and doesn't use the 82C710 chip anymore? Does the startup code
report it has detected a 82C710 type pointing device, or a standard PS/2
type pointing device?

Yup, this seems to be the case. The startup code is reporting a
standard PS/2 type pointing device.
