XWindows crashes

I have recently switched to 1.3.18 (compiled a.out w/ gcc 2.6.3)
Now I ran into a somewhat bigger problem:
X-Windows just hangs up the entire machine from time to time.
Especially when using color_xterm or netscape.
Symptoms are as follows:
- System hangs, mouse cursor doesn't move anymore, etc...
- Keyboard dies (not even the lights come on anymore when
I hit num lock)

I figured this had to be kernel related, since I never had
the problem with kernels before 1.3.18 (I used 1.3.13 before that).

I hope someone else has the same problem and maybe a solution!
