Many thanks go to both Keith Owens, and the multitude of others
that responded to my 2.4.x boot problem. Keith sent me his
VIDEO_CHAR patch which helped track things down, and will also
prove helpful in the future as well.

The problem ended up being user error. ;o) My kernels are
compiled for K6 *ALWAYS*, however for some unknown reason,
Winchip was selected and I didn't notice. I've no idea how this
could have occured since it was initially the 2.2.x config I've
been using. Only thing I can think of is perhaps some menuconfig
bug that occured at some point in time throughout 2.3.x or 2.4.x
tests. I've never booted a 2.3.x or 2.4.x kernel on this box so
I would never have noticed this.

The kernel does in fact boot now though, and the IDE stuff in 2.4
looks damned sharp too! I'm getting an extra meg/s out of both
drives. Good work Andre and Vojtech! (sp?)

So far no problems other than no-reiserfs support. ;o( Which
brings up my next question. ;o)

Is there a stable reiserfs patch for 2.4.x? If not no big deal,
I'll just switch back to ext2, and use ext3 in 2.2.x.

Thanks again everyone for the good help!

2.4.x is looking very good indeed.
