Framebuffer/console modules?

Greetings! I've just discovered the impressive framebuffer/console
support in the stock 2.2 kernels, and had one question. One can
compile these as modules, but it seems that the code is unusable as
modules. Only by appending a vga= command line to the kernel at boot
time (e.g. via lilo) can one enable different console modes as well as
framebuffer support for X, AFAIK. Am I missing something?

Take care,
