aic 7xxx does cause time outs on my Adaptec 3950U2

Kernel 2.2.14, aic7xxx 5.1.31

When my disk activity raises over a longer time, I'm getting kernel
messages of the kind

<date> <machine-name> kernel: scsi: aborting command due to timeout
pid <>, scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0, write (10) [...]

Quite annoying cause I can't burn any CDs like this.

My machine:

Adaptec 3950U2 Bios 2.20.0, Asus P5A Bios 1009 1, AMD K6-2 500 MHz, stb
velocity 4400 PCI, SuSE Linux 6.4

My SCSI setup:

Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: QUANTUM Model: ATLAS IV 9 WLS Rev: 9312
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 03
Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 01 Lun: 00
  Vendor: PIONEER Model: CD-ROM DR-U16S Rev: 1.01
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 02 Lun: 00
Vendor: YAMAHA Model: CRW4260 Rev: 1.0q
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 04 Lun: 00
Vendor: HP Model: C1130A Rev: 3540
Type: Processor ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 05 Lun: 00
Vendor: IOMEGA Model: ZIP 100 Rev: C.19
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02

The scanner and the ZIP are external of course. The Quantum is connected
with LVD cabling. Under FreeBSD 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows NT this setup
works fine, so it's not related to the setup.

As I remember this beast worked under SuSE 6.0, but I don't not the Kernel
version nor the aic7xxx version anymore.

With the original aic7xxx (v 5.1.25) that came with SuSE 6.4 that I'm using
now, the problems were worse. So I patched up to version 5.1.31 and
recompiled the kernel. Things got better. I recompiled again with tagged
command queuing disabled. Better, no more scsi bus resets, but nevertheless
some timeouts. They appear about every 30 minutes.

Doug, perhaps could you take a look at the newest FreeBSD drivers? They
even claim on there website, that the new driver supports the 3950U2.
