compile devfs in, but don't mount it. Now cat /proc/mounts - mnt_devname
for root is calculated by devfs code anyway and
        a) doesn't look like an old special case (/dev/root*)
        b) doesn't correspond to any device name, since devfs is not
mounted.
Confuses the heck of some rc scripts...
