ATI Rage Pro LT fb doesn't work in 2.4.0-test1-ac18

The ATI Rage Pro driver in 2.4.0-test1-ac18 doesn't work on my ATI Rage
Pro LT equipped Compaq Presario 1800T.

I'm not sure it's really supposed to be, but the author Brad Douglas,
brad@neruo.com, thought it ought to work.

The chips added in the table of chips to probe for are the "Rage
Mobility M3" PCI and AGP, with PCI_DEVICE_ID_ATI_RAGE128_LE and LF.

I think I have a different chip. So I get a blank screen when I boot
with this driver.

I stuck in some code brad sent me directly and patched it a little to
compile under 2.4.0xxx and it compiles OK but didn't work either.

>From the look of it there's a lot of difference between what brad sent
me and what is in the ac18 kernel.

I know that the XFree86 Rage Pro server is able to work with my chipset,
starting in a version late last fall (not sure when that was). If
someone gives me some tips on what to fiddle with I could look in the
XFree86 source and try poking around in aty128fb.c to make my video work
with it.

I have the book "Linux Kernel Internals" and haven't read it yet. I can
compile a 2.4.0 kernel with the latest patches. I know how to press my
power key to turn my machine off and so far that hasn't eaten my hard
disk. So that's the extent of my kernel hacking qualifications... for
Linux at least.

But at (ducking) Apple Computer I was an OS engineer and did extensive
debugging on the MacOS, so I should be able to pick something up. (At
least with Linux you have source... when I wrote trap patches for a
living I just used the debugger and a lot of trial and error to do
system programming).
