ATA disks have done automatic bad sector remapping for years, and SMART.
SCSI won a long time ago. ATAPI is SCSI messages over the IDE bus. USB
block devices are SCSI messages over USB bus. Fibrechannel uses SCSI messages
and I believe even IEEE1394 does
