That is specifically what he did *not* say. He did seem to indicate
that older *filesystems* should be able to be used in newer kernels without
trouble and without corrupting the older *filesystem* such that it will not
work under the kernel it was created under.
Newer filesystems obviously do not have to be backwards compatible so
that they will work on kernels which did not support them.
Basically everything should work during a given stable kernel series
(eg 2.0.x, 2.2.x, 2.4.x).
