help: hdd as raw device?

is there a possibility to mount a single disk
originally formatted by a raid-controller as
a raw device in order to get a tar-ball of
it's contents as a backup and restore it to a
harddisk of the same type,
if the steps to repair the array fail?

the backround:
we just got a problem with a raid-controller
(ACER 9000) with important data (source-code)
on it.
we cannot get a similar controller, they just have
newer models available.
they want us to send it in, but the data are too
important for us to rely on their luck...

any experiences or suggestions?
