kernel version doesn't change

I'm trying to install a gigabit network interface which requires a
2.2.12 kernel. I'm running RH6.1, with a 2.2.12-20smp kernel. When the
module tries to compile, it chokes on the "-20" extension, so I've
downloaded and compiled a straight 2.2.12 kernel from kernel.org

The problem is that uname -r still reports "2.2.12-20smp" when I want
it to report "2.2.12" (or "2.2.12smp"). What do I update to reflect
the current kernel version so that uname (and /etc/issue) reflect the
correct (current) values?
