Large Memory Systems Info

Could someone point me to a FAQ or other info that explains more about
Linux's current ability to use large (i.e. 1GB+) amounts of memory.
Specifically why you don't get all 1GB of your 1GB system, you only get
900 some odd megabytes. Also when support for more then 2GB is
expected. Thanks.
