extra info:

I (admit I) grew the habit of adding '-mcpu=i686 -O6' to gcc wherever possible,
so in /usr/src/linux I do:

for m in `find . -name Makefile`
do
mv $m $m.dist; cat $m.dist | sed "s/-O2/-mcpu=i686 -O6/g" | sed "s/-m486/-mcpu=i686/g" | sed "s/-m386/-mcpu=i686/g" >$m
done

(*) But this time (2.2.13pre15) I also changed 1 *extra* line in Makefile:

CC =$(CROSS_COMPILE)gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I$(HPATH)
to
CC =$(CROSS_COMPILE)gcc -mcpu=i686 -O6 -D__KERNEL__ -I$(HPATH)

It seems like this caused the Oops and hda: interrupt losses because if I
don't do the above (*), 2.2.13pre15 seems to run fine (at least for a while now).

recall: I (know I should not) use gcc version 2.95.1

I am a big boy so I don't complain ;-) I just hope this tiny detail may help
