Thanks for all the response, and sorry for my delay in making this
reply.

There has been some skepticism about the gain using mmx routines and
-march=k6
compiler option.

Therefore I have created a set of tests, using lmbench-2alpha11
(thanks to Mark Hahn for pointing me to this program).

The test was done in the following way:
I compiled four kernels (linux-2.3.18ac10):
- one with mmx enabled, and using -march=k6
- one with mmx disabled, and using -march=k6
- one with mmx enabled, and using -march=i586
- one with mmx disabled, and using -march=i586
All other kernel options are the same, in the four kernels.

For each kernel I booted in singleusermode, and made three runs with
lmbench. (1,2 and 3)

My machine is a K6-2 300 MHz (100 MHz FSB), 192 Mb, Asus P5A-B (Aladdin
V
chipset), 10,1 Gb IBM 5,4K rpm HD, Asus V3400 (TNT) graphics adapter.

The .config is included as an attachment.

As this is the my fist use of lmbench, I don't know what to expect, or
what
ot look for, and therefore I will not comment on the results. I hope
that
some of you will :-)

These are the results:
