Grrhh. I thought I fixed this problem last year, but it seems that the
changes in layer 3 put again a Null pointer to some indirect function
call, if no protocol was selected. OK, I'll set this on the TODO for the
next patch.

Yes, but no protocol should be a valid option (e.g. for leased lines) and
should be not kill the kernel, but give a runtime warning.
